Add to Memories Tell a Friend
He's taken to bathing instead of taking showers at night, long slow soaks that send water pooling over the sides of the claw bathtub to the marble floor. He'll go through half a pack of cigarettes, lying under rose-scented bubbles and sending clouds of blue smoke toward the ceiling. He keeps hoping that somehow, some way, the time spent being introspective will bring the situation into clarity, help it make more sense; the more he thinks, the more he keeps coming back to the same truths over and over again.

He's in love with his best friend.

He's in love with his girlfriend.

Soren scrubs his face with his fingertips, calloused skin running over his eyelids until he sees sparks. It brings no revelations beyond the one he's already come to. Sighing, he stubs out his cigarette and lights another with a careful spell, eyes closed. He's in love with Cass. He's in love with Cass. It was at the same time unsurprising and astounding - astounding because it's something they've spent their entire lives denying and laughing about, unsurprising because as far back as Soren can remember, Cass has been there. Soren's first memory is actually of casting water spells to tease his best friend, scaring him. He tells the anecdote fondly, but usually leaves out the last part, the part where Soren's mother went over to scold him and found him in tears, comforting his best friend. It's been like that ever since. Soren likes making Cassidy happy, because it makes him happy. He's never so comfortable around anyone as he is around Cass, and even now, even after they've introduced sex, it's right. It's good. There's nothing awkward about it when everything should be.

Except for the part where he loves the other man.

Soren bites his lip, trying to figure out how to rectify things. Sable's fine with things, he knows that; if anything, she's probably suspected by then. Hell, she's probably known all along. He smiles a little, amused at how lucky he's been to find a girlfriend that perceptive. Henn? Soren's betting that she'll be pretty okay with things, if only because she seems to be the sort that would be. He and Cass are the ones that are slow to realize things, slow to come to terms, and it makes Soren chuckle. Mostly, Soren feels guilt because he told Cass this would never happen. And if their friendship stutters or stops because of it, Soren will bury it in half a heartbeat. But mostly, Soren knows eventually he'll blurt it out at an awkward time, like dinner or during a movie. Something has to happen, soon.

He lets the water out of the bath and gingerly wraps himself into a robe. It's a rock and a hard place, and he just wants out - but what if the out is worse? Soren knows what'll happen to him if Cass turns away. Soren's been in that pit before, and that was just over a girl he'd known for a few years. Refusing to let himself think about that, he shakes his head, takes his smokes, and goes to lay down in bed for a while.

1. What are your three favorite bands/musicians?
The Misfits, Dream Theater, Mitsuko Uchida.

2. What are your five favorite songs?
Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen (by Schubert, and I prefer any version with the vocals), Die My Darling by the Misfits (not the crappy Metallica cover), Dig Up Her Bones by the Misfits, Wait for Sleep by Dream Theater, and the song Dad wrote for me.

4. What kind of genre do you listen to most of all?
Any variety of rock.

5. Do you play any instruments?
Guitar, cello, harp, piano.

6. If you were a part of a band, what would you play and why?
I'm best at guitar, but I wouldn't play it in a band. Probably the piano.

7. If you had a theme song, what would it be?
Either Voodoo Child by Hendrix or Let it Be by the Beatles.

8. What are the most striking lyrics you've heard recently?
Duty, who's your master?
Who gave you fingers?
Who gave you to me?
And why do we always dream of disaster
When we pay our dues to disaster with some loyalty?
And when its work is done, and we ought to just pick up and run, we
sleep in the place we have slept for so long...

So long, for so long, so long in the place we should run from.

And when I, when I have forgotten, when I have forgotten me how to
stand and sing,
I will raise up, raise one finger, one finger of the truth that wears no
And when its work is done, and the stitch of my smile has come
undone, I'll tell you why I wore it for so long...

And I wasn't so drunk that I didn't hear you dreaming,
All seized up and wretched and baying blue hell at the ceiling of the room we're always dying to leave.. alright.

Duty, who's your master?
Who gave you fingers?
Who gave you to me?
And why are we always dreaming of disaster
When we live our lives so careless and so comfortably?
O but underneath this song, I can hear another song, it tells me I'm
not wrong to stay so long...

And I wasn't so drunk that I didn't hear you dreaming.

("The Baron of Sentiment" by Augie March)

101 Questions You Should Be Able to Answer About Your Character

1. What is your full name? Do you have a nickname?
Soren Elias Chappu Skwigelf. It's a mouthful, but two middle names means I get to pick one at random whenever I fill out questionnaires. (Mom and Dad just liked Soren, Dad liked Elias, and Mom knew a guy named Chappu that died in the war she fought.)

2. How old are you? When is your birthday?
Right now, I'm twenty-one. Technically, I should be... oh, two weeks old, but I'm not really in control of the swirling vortex of doom that brought me here. My birthday's April 25th.

3. Where were you born? Where do you live now? Are you patriotic?
I was born in Stockholm, Sweden, though I spent a lot of my life in London and the Caribbean. The United States too - Dad and his band have a lot of land there. (I speak Swedish, English, and Al Bhed fluently.) I like all of them, but I'm not really preferential to one over the other.

4. Who are/were your parents? (Names, occupations, personalities, etc.)
My dad is Skwisgaar Skwigelf, the fastest guitarist alive. My mom is Lulu Skwigelf, black mage and ex-Guardian. I love them a lot. Dad's sort of moody sometimes, but most of the time he's really awesome. And Mom's as maternal and calm a lady as anyone could want in a mom. They're amazing.

5. Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?
Technically? I only have a younger sister named Skadi. Skadi's fantastic, she's part pixie. (Not really.) She's super talented and gorgeous and mean and awesome. Also, to anyone with a brain, I have an older sister. Glyndaa's badass, she's beautiful and sweeter than anyone gives her credit for.

6. What is your occupation?
At home, I wrote an advice column for Cosmo. I do that again here, it's a really easy gig. I've also started writing books (a couple of children's ones, only one's published), and I work three days a week at The Snake Pit as a dancer/waiter. I'm also trying to start a band with Teja.

7. How tall are you? How much do you weigh?
I'm 6'2" and weigh about 195.

8. What color is your hair? What color are your eyes?
Blond hair, blue eyes.

9. What is your race?
Half Swede, half Spiran. Though I think we usually just say I'm half Swedish and half British.

10. To which social class do you belong?
Mom and Dad have money. I try not to use it too much unless I really have to. I'm about average, I guess.

11. Do you consider yourself to be attractive? Do others?
Well, I do engage in frequent acts of self-love, though I don't think that's because of my outward appearance. I guess I'm attractive to others, but you should probably go ask them.

12. What is your style of dress?
Jeans and t-shirts. Boots, mostly because if I'm at Mordhaus there's bound to be glass on the floor.

13. Do you have any scars? Tattoos? Birthmarks? Other unique physical features?
Nope. I was supposed to have my appendix out when I was twelve, but Mom and Dad took me to a healer instead. I have forget-me-nots on my left wrist, a design that Cass made on my right, a rectangle on my back (one line is forget-me-nots, one line is a throwing dagger, one line is made of musical notes, and the other is Shadow) and CASS on my left-hand knuckles. I also have my ears pierced and an ampallang.

14. Do you have any allergies, diseases, or other physical weaknesses?
I have a very sensitive nose. It's a blessing and a curse.

15. Are you right- or left-handed?

16. What does your voice sound like?

17. What kind of vocabulary do you use?
Shiny? I don't know what this is even asking.

18. List three quirks or other defining characteristics.
- Large groups of teenage girls make me twitchy and nervous.
- I have to sleep in absolute darkness.
- I don't like making lists. I prefer those brainstorm charts that look like spider's webs, mostly because the plan gets lost somewhere in there along the way and everyone has more fun when things are a little loose.

19. How often do you bathe? Do you wear perfumes?
Every day, though I usually only wash my hair every other day. I've got too much of it otherwise. I don't wear perfume, but I do steal Mom's girlie soap.

20. What kind of facial expression do you commonly wear (dour glare, wry smile, etc)?
Apparently I look grumpy most of the time. I don't think so, but I'm not the one judging, I guess.

21. Do you use body language? How?
Everyone uses body language, and I'd assume I use it in a completely normal way.

22. Do you have a commonly used saying?

23. What is your earliest memory?
Mom yelling at me for trying to drown Cass with water spells. ... okay, that's what I tell everyone it is. Really, it's me and Cass sharing a juice box and Lilo laughing at us for kissing after sips.

24. How much schooling have you had? Did you enjoy it?
I went to college. It was okay, but I dropped out. I'm going to go back in the Fall.

25. Where did you learn most of your knowledge and skill?
Dad taught me (almost) everything I know about music, Mom taught me everything I know about magic, and Bill and Jack taught me about books. I learned a lot from those about the everything else.

26. How would you describe your childhood in general?
Pretty normal, actually. Which is actually really weird, considering my family.

27. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Winnie the Pooh.

28. When and with whom was your first kiss?
Cass. No, actually, it was this girl in my fifth grade class during Truth or Dare. I don't honestly remember her name.

29. Are you a virgin? If not, when and with whom did you lose your virginity?
No. I was 16 when I lost my virginity, and it was with the first girl I ever dated. I don't want to talk about it.

30. Do you have a notorious or celebrated ancestor? Does that affect you?
Mom's kind of sort of famous where she's from, but there's not many people who'd know that. And Dad's ridiculously famous. But I don't think many people know I exist, what with the time being weird and bendy, so that worked out well for me. Even back home, it wasn't ever too big of a deal.

31. What do you consider the most important event of your life so far?
Coming back in time. It's made my life so much better.

32. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Getting a book published.

33. What is your greatest regret?
That I didn't invent the dry-erase board. Those things are really useful. (Cass knows the real one. I'm not talking about it again.)

34. What is the most embarrassing or shameful thing ever to happen to you?
I was involved in a misguided plot to free the class hamster in kindergarten that may or may not have lead to the teacher having a slight nervous breakdown due to student anarchy.

35. Do you have any secrets? If so, what are they?
Honestly, not really. I'm pretty open.

36. What is the most evil thing you have ever done?
Spread a rumor that my first girlfriend in high school had Super Herpes after she dumped me.

37. When was the time you were the most frightened?
Murderface was nice to me once. That's wrong and creepy and bad.

38. Have you ever traveled outside of your country? If so, to where?
I've been to every continent but Antarctica. And I haven't been to the North Pole, but that's not a country, or a continent.

39. What is your alignment?
Chaotic neutral fluxing to good.

40. Are you basically optimistic or pessimistic?
I'm a realist that hopes things will turn out for the best.

41. Do you believe in a god? If so, which one and why?
Ehn. Let them see if they believe in me. My belief doesn't change anything.

42. Do you believe in an afterlife?
I don't spend a lot of time worrying about something I can't change.

43. What is your greatest fear?
Being apart from my family and friends. Living alone inside my own head.

44. What makes you angry? Sad? Happy? Why?
Angry: People who hit their boyfriend or girlfriend.
Sad: The day after Christmas.
Happy: Babies laughing, the smell of baked goods baking, Mom's laugh, when Dad smiles (he almost never does).

45. Do you think people are basically good or basically evil?
Neither. People are basically lazy.

46. What are your views on politics? Religion? Sex?
Politics: are stupid.
Religion: isn't for me.
Sex: is nice, and people should do it with me more.

47. What are your views on gambling, lying, theft, and killing?
Gambling: Eh. It's a fun way to lose money.
Lying: Is too much effort.
Theft: no need.
Killing: Yeah, don't do that.

48. How far will you go to defend your beliefs?
Not very far, really, if it's just a discussion or someone being an asshole. If it's an issue of governmental oppression or something, I don't honestly know. It hasn't come to that yet.

49. How much do you value money?
It's nice to have, but I could be okay with less.

50. In your opinion, what is the most evil thing any human being could do?
Hurt a kid.

51. Do you believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good?
To a certain extent.

52. Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love?
Yeah, actually. It might not come in a fairy tale package, but true love exists.

53. Are you superstitious?

54. How much do you respect the beliefs and opinions of others?
They can have theirs and I can have mine. That doesn't mean we can't hang out and shoot the shit for a while.

55. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings?
Bill had to teach me how to tone it down some, but I'm still pretty blunt. I'm just not overtly rude anymore like I was when I was a kid.

56. Do you have any biases or prejudices?
If you snap your gum, I probably hate you.

Dealing With Others

57. Who is the most important person in your life, and why?
Everyone I care about.

58. Who is the person you respect the most? Despise the most? Why?
I respect Cass the most. He's good people, and he's got the biggest heart I've ever seen. Though I do despise him the most when he steals the last slice of pizza.

59. Do you have a significant other? Who?
I'm married to Cass and Sable, and I love Cass' wife very much too.

60. Do you have a lot of friends? Who is your best friend?
Cass has been my best friend since we were in diapers. ... not the same diaper, mind. Separate diapers.

61. How do you relate to members of the same race? Class? Sex?
Pretty well.

62. How do you relate to members of a different race? Class? Sex?
Pretty well. Those aren't the things I care about when trying to find friends.

63. Have you ever been in love? If so, describe what happened.
Yes. Still am.

64. What do you look for in a potential lover?
Smarts, sass, smells good. Sorry I couldn't make that a proper alliteration.

65. How close are you to your family?
Every huge extended fucked up facet, yeah. I love all of them. EVEN YOU, TEJA.

66. Do you want a marriage, family, and/or children?
No. I aspire to be a troll under a bridge that asks for toll in the form of goats. Of course I do.

67. Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
I'll call it like it is, but I don't usually argue. We can both think what we want. I hate yelling, which is weird, since I think Dad is a gold medal yeller.

Food: Hamburgers.
Possession: The stuffed Moogle Mom came here with and gave to me when I was a baby.

I like all kinds of music (though yeah, I love metal). I like Dadaist art best, because it's nice and trippy. Action and horror movies win.

Smoke yes, drink yes, whoring no, drugs on occasion but not anything really hard. Dad would kill me.

80. How do you spend a typical Saturday night?
Annoying Cass.

81. What is your most cherished fantasy?
There's this one about Cass and whipped cream. Except not. It's really Kool Whip. Um. I don't know, the normal one, I guess? Meet a nice person, fall in love, have some kids, die happy and old. I like that I'm pretty much living it.

Pretty good. Mom teaching me magic helped a lot.

I go swimming.

I can do a handstand and somersaults, I'm a good swimmer, and I could probably outrun anyone in Dethklok (though that last bit isn't really saying much). I can play the cello (Cass bugged me until I would take lessons with him), piano (thanks Uncle Min!), guitar (Dad taught me that, obviously), and the harp. Yeah, I don't know, I just dicked around on it a lot, shut up.

87. Do you like animals? Do you like children?
I'm an animal fanatic, and I like kids a lot. ... so yes, emphatically so to both.

Screw the plan, let's just go do something.

93. Do you like yourself?
Sure. Most of the time.

Nah, not really. I mean, I've got a normal morning routine so that I end up not stinky, but after that, whatever.
